I was in 2 car accidents within 6 months of each other. I wasn't driving and both times it was the other person's fault. Just making things clear here, my family members are very safe drivers.

One of them when I was a passenger on the school bus going home. The bus stopped at the railroad tracks like normal and the vehicle behind us wasn't expecting that for whatever reason and then when trying to stop, ended up skidding in to the back of the bus because of the wet roads. Everyone on the bus was fine, but I heard the driver of the car had at least a bloody nose.

The second one was where a guy made a left turn in to the back of my car instead of behind me. He spun me a complete 180 degrees. I now have a chronic pain condition from that and it happened more than 9 years ago.

The worst car accident (out of 3 I was in) was New Year's Eve 1992. Driving in blizzard, lost control of 2 door car and had a semi truck hit me. I ended up having 3 months of Physical Therapy so I could turn my head and shoulder again. Grateful I was wearing a seatbelt!

the 1st wrek i was in my mom had told us a year or 2 before it happend that it would happen, she said she was the 1 that would be driving. she also said that me, her, & my brother knew the people who were going to hit us. after we got hit and went to the same ER that we went to exactly a week ago because i broke my hand while i was playing baseball, she told me the only thing she saw that didnt happen was that i was supposed to die(luckily i didnt), but instead she got hurt to where it was very painfull for her sit or stand for 6 months at least. but in the wreck we had 4 doge vehichles boxing us in the 1 of them is on the phone, and me & mom see the driveer mouth "i got this, im going to take care of this"

i look down & pick up my drink, next thing i know is: im holding a crushed pop can that was full when i picked it up but now empty, extremely small shards of glass were on the dash the hood is crumpled up the 1 part that formed a point the very tip was sticking thru the winshield, smoke was coming from the vents instead of ac. i was having a hard time breathing so i tried to open my door but couldnt, when a lady comes from her car walks up & say we needed to get out of the car now, my mom gets out on her side of the car while im still trying to get out on mine, after mom gets out i say i cant open my door & the lady say it wont work that i needed to climb out on the other side,i do, the lady says that we need to get away from the car so we walk few yards up & sit on the guard rail, after about 5-10 min. even though im as blind as a bat i relize im missing my glasses, the lady says she'll go get them & does then hands them to me

That's true, coolmom, but the same can be said for you northern drivers who are used to driving in snow that come down south where we get mostly ice. You can't drive on ice like you do on snow! So stop speeding by me when the roads are icy and I'm going along at a safe speed.

Most people with a license will be in an accident at some point in their lives. Is that crazy? Yes. But there are plenty of crazy drivers out there, so it could be someone elses' fault. And keep in mind that most people end up driving at least twice per day (to and from work). If you do ANYTHING that often your chances of getting hurt doing it skyrocket.

The only accident I have been in was caused by a woman texting and driving. She was about forty (so everyone can get the stereotype of teen girls being the only ones who text and drive out of their mind) and she was texting. She ran a red light going about 45 mph and hit me as I was pulling out from the stop light. Luckily, I was going less than 10 mph because I was starting from a dead stop. If I had been going any faster she would have hit me right in the driver's side door and I probably would have been injured very badly. Also, I was very lucky that a cop was at the other red light and saw the accident happen. The woman tried to blame me for the accident. She kept screaming that her light was green and that I had run the red light. However, the cop saw everything because he was stopped at the same red light that she claimed was green.

Scary!! I bet you always look before proceeding now. When I was younger, pre cell-phone and pre-texting days, I had the habit of just going when the light turned green, and one time my left turn arrow turned green and instead of my usual habit, I turned my head to the left a split second before I accelerated, and a girl was ZOOMING through the red light with a look of horror on her face as she realized it. If I hadn't looked, I'd most likely have been dead. That was a valuable lesson to always look before I go. I had some bad habits in the past that fortunately I survived. At least "my" red-light runner had the decency to be horrified that she was running a red light. I bet she became a much more alert driver, and your red-light runner sadly probably did not, since she didn't do anything wrong, in her fantasy land.

I meant to say this in the post but I forget. There was a big Suburban type SUV in the turning lane beside me and I wasn't able to see anything around it. I did look, but because of that car there was no way for me to see her coming through the red light. I would have had to be out in the intersection to see her.

Here in my state we have laws against texting and driving but it is difficult to enforce. I think any cell phone use while driving should be against the law. There is nothing so important that you can't wait or at least pull over to answer a call. That's what voicemail is for.

Using a cell phone is against the law in Connecticut, but people still do it, and as you say it's impossible to enforce. Can't have 5000 police out there pulling over 1/3 of all drivers at any given time. I hope they enforce it sometimes, though.

I agree. People caught texting and driving should pay hefty fines but not have their phone taken. That's extreme. Most people now days don't have landlines anymore and use only cell phones. If everyone who texts and drives was pulled over and made to pay a hefty fine then our country would be out of debt in no time.
3Honeyb
on 03/13/13
I agree with you, bluela, that texting is much more dangerous than talking while driving. I guess it's because I grew up in the days before cell phones, but when the call goes to voicemail that means "I can't talk". I do have Sync on my car but phone calls through it sound horrible!
bluela
on 03/13/13
I don't think you could legally make someone surrender their phone. But they should definitely increase fines. I also think fines should be MUCH higher for texting than for just holding a phone to your ear. I'm not for talking while driving either, but to me there's a big difference between saying a quick "I can't talk but I'll be there soon" or texting an ongoing dialogue.
luvdemzlovato
on 03/13/13
also from california. the law should be more strict. for example, they should pay a fine the first time. if it happens again, make them pay a fine and surrender their phone. their driver's license should be suspended too. that should teach them to stop texting while driving

I agree. And get off everything else you do if you can't multi-task, down to and including simply driving. I know some people who seem overwhelmed by the multi-tasking of breathing and driving. When I was a new driver, I found myself daydreaming a few times and at that young age forced myself to focus and nipped that in the bud. People don't have to be suicidal and homicidal when they drive - they can actually do the right thing and should force themselves to.

Some are just accidents that happen (that's why they call them accidents) and some are because we have drivers like my cousin, grandmother, and sister out there on the road (cousin has epilepsy and before she was diagnosed she had two seizures while driving, my grandmother's just old, and my sister likes to do a million things while driving which angers the rest of us).

A year ago I had a seizure while driving. What happened was frightening; what COULD have happened was horrifying. I came out a side street (15mph) doing about 45mph, ran a red light, struck & pushed another car aside, & continued across busy street toward a gas station. Once there, I slammed into their brick marquee, pushing my engine block 2' into my passenger compartment.
Had it not stopped me I would have most likely struck people & possibly a gas pump. My vehicle was a total loss.
Here in VA your license is suspended for a min 6 mos, then you need release by your doc, who can can delay that as long as they feel you are not safe to be behind the wheel. Once you are driving again, doc must submit a new release every year.
If my seizure alert dog had still been alive, she would have warned me of the impending seizure & I would never had left the house.

nothing ever serious enough for me to consider it a "car accident." i once lightly backed into a tree...but it was at such a slow speed, and did absolutely nothing to neither my car nor the tree...so that just doesn't count at all. and a few times i was in the car and my mom backed into something...doing very little damage. again...don't consider that a car accident. so...nope. never been in one.

Does it have to be two cars to be an accident? The first day I had my learners permit, Mom took me to an abandoned parking lot. We practiced turning, and I was doing fine to the left, so she had me try turning right. She forgot to remind me that I couldn't make as tight of a turn as I make when I'm walking because of the ten or so feet of metal beside me, and I wasn't thinking about it. I went up on the planter and scraped the side of the car pretty badly against the concrete light support. That's the worst that's ever happened with me behind the wheel.

Yea. I was driving my Jeep after Christmas and it was snowing really hard. I was coming from my friends house which is a 15-minute drive away. The snow had picked up a lot from the time I left there even.
I'm basically on a straight road now and driving real slow. Not very far from my house. Someone else was driving their cadillac coupe and going much faster than I was trying to go. He spun sideways when he was hitting this slight bend in the road. I saw him from far away and hit my breaks as soon as I saw him spinning out. Yet his car just came speeding sideways, not stopping or slowing down. Definitely seemed to get faster. I couldn't believe how far he continued to slide. He slammed into the front of my car. I was in terrible pain but luckily still alive. My car was totaled and now I'm driving something worse than before. I don't know what that fool was thinking driving that car and going as fast as he was. Airbags hit me really hard too. It was

I count it as an accident even if you're the only one involved. Last winter I drove over a patch of slush on the highway while braking. Not the smartest thing to do, and I learned my lesson; the car started swerving to one side and then the other, did a spin, and eventually ended up buried in the snow on the side of the road (I live in Alaska). Thankfully, there was a cop nearby and another driver who checked to make sure I was okay. Still, I'd count that as an accident.
