I wanted a boy. I have always been a tomboy and thought that I would have much more to offer a boy than I ever would a girl. I like fishing, camping, and video games, not at all interested in dances, or playing with dolls. I had my son first, followed by two girls, and now that my youngest is 7, I am proud to say that my daughters are tomboys just like me. I guess I had more to offer them than I gave myself credit for.

I can't have kids, but I have two sisters and one brother. I don't know if it's because my parents wanted a boy so bad that he is so screwed up now or what. All I know is all the girls turned out ok. I mean we may have made our mistakes, but we learned from them. He has not. that being said if I adopt it will probably be a girl.

My parents have 5 girls and 1 son. My husband and I have 3 sons and one daughter. Plus one daughter in Heaven. She was a stillborn and would have been 20 this year. I know she is in the best place. :) It hurt so much when it happened, but the Good Shepherd has watched over us and helped with the hurt a lot!

since majority of the sites users are women I`m not surprised that an extra 2% wanted a girl. But it shouldn`t matter if in the future you have both a girl and a boy.

Good to see most people don't have a preference. Sad to see the nearly double difference in desire of male firstborns. It's a beautiful baby, what does it matter the gender?

I assume, like myself, that first and foremost, people want the baby to be happy and healthy regardless of gender. I believe that goes without saying in the majority of cases.
That said, I don't see what's wrong with having a preference. I wanted a girl...I don't know why, maybe it's because I'm a girl, maybe it's to buy her pretty dresses...whatever, that's just what I would pick if I were given the choice. Obviously, you don't get to pick. I had a boy. I was instantly and totally in love with him and I still am 11 years later.

I grew up with only 1brother and 3 sisters so for years I wanted a bunch of girls. Then my parents adopted a baby boy when I was 24 and I fell in love with him. By the time I got around to having my 1st at 28, God gave me a heart for a little boy which I had. It wasn't sexist. I am personally scared to raise both boys and girls in this culture (I have both now), but it just felt right for me to have a boy first.
TheQueenKasey

think the reason for a higher rate in boys than girls is that if you want more an one child the boy can protect the girl

I wanted a boy first and a girl 2nd so he could protect his little sister. Sometimes the reasons aren't sexist or anything so don't be so quick to judge...

P.S. I did have a boy first, and then a girl. And he IS protective of his little sister! It's adorable! (And before you start, had my 1st BEEN a girl I would have been just as happy to have her as I was having him -- that doesn't mean it's wrong to hope it's one over the other)

I apologise for coming across as judgemental. In retrospect, there are reasons that are perfectly fine for wanting a boy first. Being an older brother myself i can totally understand the desire to protect her from harm. However, I feel that all these completely innocent reasons, may have generally created a preference or 'norm' in our culture. We forget perhaps these original reasons, and instead go along with these cultural norms to a point of extremity. To a point where we are dissapointed with a girl. Not that I am saying any of you, or even much of the population take it to this extreme. Nor am I saying that boys and girls are exactly the same, we have some definite proof of that, lol. Again I apologise if I have offended anyone, and I thank you all for this conversation.

thats great, but, doesn't matter the order they are born, boys will be protective regardless (if raised that way)..... out of 5 kids, 2 oldest are girls, and the boys are all very protective of their big sisters (me and my sibs that is)

I didn't have a strong preference, especially after 3 years of trying/infertility, but I was hoping for a boy first. I got a girl, & she was the perfect fit for our family :-) Flash foward to our second pregnancy (via IVF; little over 4 year age gap)--I was hoping for another girl, thinking that the same gender would span the age gap better. Well, we got a boy. Again, the perfect fit for our family. They get along great and play together nicely <3 I feel very blessed to have both genders, & if/when we have more, I truly don't have a preference. God has shown me time and time again that He knows what is best...even the timing that resulted from the infertility issues :-)

My first born were twins. I wanted a boy and girl, but I got two boys! I love them just the same. I wasn't able to have any more. I lost on two years before I had the boys and have always said that was my girl. The boys know they would have had an older sister had she made it. :-)

Even though I didn't have a preference, I too was happy to have a boy first and then 3 years later, a girl; and from the time she was born my son was always protective of her, which made me so proud of him and my daughter loved it too. If someone has a preference I don't see why people get upset about it - no condemnation here.
