I've always had a dog growing up, but I've also had rabbits before and they are awesome! I've had a gorgeous large goldfish, but they're boring...

Exactly! You can't do anything with fishes but you can play and show off birds, reptiles, and bunnies.

You vegetables, you. Any of the options are better than a fish.

I have already decided since my bird is getting to that sad age :( The next pet I am getting is a fish, and a single fish at that.

Fish because the are easy to take care of and entertaining to watch.

Yeah, I might be with the 5% that said reptile, but there lots of good reptiles to have as a house pet, Bearded Dragons, they will sit on the couch and watch t.v. with you! Also, Tortoises will hang out with you and work great as a foot rest! They can be passed down from generation to generation! When you live for 200+ years, you will meet 3-4 generations of a family!

A tree frog...I have two of them since I am allergic to pets with fur.

I personally think that other than having,a dog or a cat the next best pet would be a bird.

That is a BIG besides, though. I have two dogs that are better friends to me than I can explain without having the non-dog people roll their eyes.

About 15 years ago, I asked my sister-in-law what she'd done with that little gray cat she'd had. She said, "Well, I moved in a no-pets apartment so I just let her go." I did not tell her what I thought of her. I just drove back to where she had lived and started calling for Smokey. She was under a tree, panting, and yes, nearly dead of malnutrition and dehydration. It took three years for Smokey to trust that there would always be more food, so it would be OK to leave some. She is getting old. She was three when I found her (she weighed 1 pound). She weighed 8 pounds for a long time; now she weighs 5 and she sleeps a lot. I cannot even imagine my home without her. I would never have any other type of pet, nor can I consider another cat after I lose her. She is not just my cat. She is my friend and I tell her often how glad I am that she decided to come and live with me.

Yep. My rats don't stink. I clean their cages and occasionally give them bathes. Is your neighbor's rat in an aquarium? Those tend to stink, ESPECIALLY if it isn't cleaned often.

Rats? My next door neighbor has one and it stinks so bad that I had to leave. I couldn't take it even my eyes started burning and I don't have any allergies...No rat for me.
Hamstermom
on 12/22/13
If the neighbors rat stinks the neighbor isn't cleaning the cage enough. Rats don't stink unless they have bad humans taking care of them.

I've had hamsters and gerbils. If the owner does not maintain the bedding often then it does stink pretty bad. It isn't the rat that stinks, it's the owner's efforts at maintaining the cage .. that's what stinks.

I chose fish, but I really loved having bunnies. Unfortunately, they're kinda messy and far to easy to scare.

All of these make great pets, even if you cannot take a fish out of a tank, I just find it nice to watch them swim some times in the tank. Either way many people have different view of what pets they like, so the answer is differen.

If I lived in a state that allowed it, and had the proper living space, I'd adopt a fox. I find them such graceful creatures. It isn't a dog or a wolf, but a species all on its own. They can be gentle or fierce. They need plenty of space to run and jump. I knew someone who had a half indoor/outdoor area that was sealed off, but he kept it very nice for his fox. I'd really love do do the same if I got my own!

He probably doesn't care for it properly. If any pet really has odor, it isn't being groomed properly at all. Obviously the cage may have some scent, but strong odor... no.
