Yes.
No.
Depends on the relationship.
Depends on something else.

It is for distant family members, unless you are close to them. But it's not an appropriate gift for immediate family, if you live with or are close with them.

At least the recipient of the ecard knows that you remember their birthday.

Doesn't the thought count?

It depends on the person. If they don't know how to use a e-card or hates buying things online, definitely not. If they do, it can be an appropriate gift. I wouldn't mind getting e-cards especially from Amazon or department stores.

I sent my girlfriend the most Romantic Valentines Day E-Card I could find.

She sent me a very suductive text back, "I think we should see other people."

Oh yeah baby, I see a three-way in our future......I think......Right??

It's only acceptable if it's for someone you don't know well enough to buy an actual present for. I'd rather just receive a text that says Happy Birthday though, e-cards are pretty much a waste of time.

My mother always sent out e-cards to everyone, but growing up I realized that the fact is, they just aren't reasonable and it really depends on the relationship bewteen the two (or however many) people in the relationship are like.

That's a trick question. Birthdays are institutions of tradition for the sake of tradition which encourage the delegation of a specific day to allot gifts to a particular person of arbitrary importance with the implication of arbitrary significance.

The real question is: Are birthdays appropriate? Answer: No.
ONEANDONLYLIKEME
on 02/20/13
Lots of people here complaining that the e-cards are not very thoughtful, I do think otherwise, they are obviously acknowledging your birthday which involves some thought, better then the type of husband who forgets and has to run out to the get the gift.

I don't like the new website. The blue header across the top of the page doesn't work well with my Android.
I agree ecards are not gifts, and neither are paper cards. I will buy them for family members that expect to get them but personally I would rather say it in person than with a Hallmark card.

Depends on who it is, how close they are to you, and what your financial situation is. If it's a work buddy or relatives you don't often see, it sounds fine. If it's your SO or parent or something, yeah, that's weird and kinda rude.

I have a friend that lives on the other side of the country and we have never met in person. I send e-cards to her and to her only. She loves the religious ones the best and it saves natural resources. Win/win IMO.

I think it depends on wether you guys live far apart from each other. Some ecards are really cool a lot of them come with little game things to go along with it. But when it's like your neighbor its better to give a card.:)

I think eCards are appropriate depending on the person receiving it AND your relationship to that person. I would never consider it a 'gift' though.
