All these people who are saying NO people food for pets: What did animals eat before pet food came along not so very long ago?

So true. A lot of pet food is no good for them. Too much grain but that is why people food can be bad for them too. Cats especially need meat their digestion is way different than people and dogs.

Our rats and hamsters yes. Our cats don't have any interest in people food.

But I have smashed up the turkey/chicken organs for them so it looked similar to canned food which they love as a treat.

My rats are very enthusiastic about people food. They claw at my hands when I offer them cereal or crackers, and try to pry my mouth open when they know I'm eating. I've had plenty of near-accidents in the kitchen, too. Because I had my hands full, one of my rats almost jumped into the bowl of soup I was carrying. Fun times. My hedgehog also enjoys smearing peanut butter on her quills from time to time.

I don't think I'd let our rats near my mouth but they do have interest in what we eat. Ours love peanuts in the shell, cucumbers, cheerios and banana chips.

My rats like to share my food off my plate or out of my bowl when I'm having cereal.

I would like to do a raw food diet with the fiance's cat but don't have enough money for that and she is fussy. The room mates cats get a few treats when I'm cooking(chunks of meat). I hate the word people food reminds me just how processed pet food is.

I found my little cat when she was 3, under a tree. She weighed a pound. That was 15 years ago and the maximum weigh she's ever achieved is 8 pounds. I call her my sweet petite. A few months ago, she went down to four pounds, and I basically said, oh, no you're not. You have years left in you, little girl, and I'm not letting go yet. So I asked the vet what to do. She said try ice cream, fat additives for her food, Cheetos, cheese, potato chips and anything else she will eat. Baby food, maybe. Anything she'll eat. Yesterday she weighed 7.4 pounds. She loves Hagen Daz vanilla, and Cheetos. She doesn't eat them very often, but they got her interested in her healthy food again. She wouldn't touch her food with the fat additive in it, but she will lap up a tablespoon of ice cream, or crunch a Cheetos or two. Whatever it takes. At this age, I'm not worried about what people food will do to her. I'm worried about losing her.

LOL I cannot deny it. But you should see her when a bag of Cheetos gets opened. That old kitty can put on some speed. I came back from a phone call the other night to find her on my desk, in the bag, munching away.

try also buying Cat Sure or Nutri cal high calorie cat beverage and gel respectively.
Jade4142
on 10/04/13
She drinks whole milk and clean water enthusiastically. The fat additive the vet suggested she scorned utterly. I have never got her to use anything made to fix whatever was wrong with her, but you know, she's about the sweetest little cat I have ever known. The gel sounds like something she would spit out. What is it? And the beverage? What consistency does it have?

at one time you will have to make that tough decision wether you like it or not. but good for you! and her!
Jade4142
on 10/04/13
I think she will make the decision when the time is right. Cats tend to just go away and get it over with. She never goes outside so she will no doubt find a private place and just go But after 15 years with that sweet girl, I don't even want to think about that day. I told her when she lost so much weight, me first. I'm not surviving you.

My cat LOVES potato chips, BBQ is his favorite flavor. He even knows what the bag sounds like so when anyone opens anything that sounds similar to a chip bag he comes running thinking he is going to get a treat.
