Are all of the negative comments from people who were never in a frat or sorority or have close friends who were? I was in a sorority, and didn't experience ANYTHING like these negative comments imply. I'm a little insulted on behalf of Alpha Xi Deltas everywhere! (And the other Greeks at the Defiance College.) Best thing in college I ever did next to getting my degree while working and taking care of my kids.

I'm going to be a freshmen this year and I have the option of joining, so should I join a fraternity?
TheStampLady

I was in a sorority in college in the early 90s and it was the best experience of my life. Must depend on the size of the college because it wasn't expensive, there was no weird things going on, and there was a GPA requirement that had to be maintained also. I think people who were never in one maybe have ideas in their head of Greek organizations from the 80s and before where very weird and dangerous things happened. There are college and organizational laws against it now and the college I went to stuck to them. Go to the Greek Week things where you are introduced to all the fraternities and check out each one, no matter whether you originally thought about joining them or not. You might be surprised!

I'm almost a second year. Hello, there!
Well, I wouldn't recommend it. As some users have already stated, while you could make friends that could help you out, many do very weird things....some of them aren't mature in the slightest. I've avoided joining or even being near a fraternity, and I'm absolutely satisfied with my decision. But, if you can, talk to your family about. It's best if everyone hears everyone else's opinions, first. (:

Yes, IF your parents will pay for you. It would probably be too expensive otherwise. But you'll form life long friendships and really be able to have the 'typical' (read: epic) college experience. Plus you'll have 'brothers' who will have your back when you can't afford anything to eat but Ramen, get a flat tire at 3AM, want to find a hook up, etc. etc. After college you'll already have a valuable network of contacts you can connect with for job opportunities, rec letters, etc, etc.

Find out their reputation first and what their hazing rituals are. the sorority that I was asked to join and came close to wanted their pledges to drink beer foam off of a dirty carpet, which would have stopped me right there. Besides you dont want the reputation of being "easy" and in the HS mentality most people I knew quit their junior year anyways

You don't need a frat to make great friendships. I graduated over 10 years ago and still regularly hang out with a few of my college friends. But I do think friendships is important so I disagree with people who just say focus on your studies. Sometimes those studies turn out to be useless anyways.

no, join your local masonic lodge instead. college is to important to your future to waste your time and energy on drinking and parties. if you want to do charitable work the freemasons always have some charity they are working on. if you are looking for brotherhood then you wont find men of better character anywhere else!
TheStampLady
on 07/28/13
ALL of the fraternities and sororities at the college I went to did charitable work and have an organization they "adopt". My sorority does work and raises money for Autism, and all the Greeks do the Adopt a Highway trash clean up. Our college is a dry college, so we didn't sit around and drink and party instead of concentrating on college. We had a certain GPA we had to keep above and had study hours weekly.

It depends if you find a organization that is really suited to your personality. I know that there are some colleges where that is your main housing option, so, in that case, I would suggest doing that. If not, I would suggest holding off on pledging for a while.... Many of the guys who are your best friends in your first semester freshman year you will barely end up speaking to by the time you are a senior, just because you are still finding your way.

Unless you are one of those unfortunate people whose mom and grandma and so on were all in this one sorority and if you don't join you will never get a job, just don't do it. If you want to drink and party, make a few friends in the greek circles or something. I mean seriously...they have these frequent meetings and you are required to go or they fine you.
