I just realized I didn't click the right thing. We will be at one Halloween party, for our son's Cub Scout pack. Every year, our church passes out bags of candy and has hot chocolate and coffee, during Trick or Treat.
Our kids do dress up and Trick or Treat, but never the creepy costumes.

Please do not turn my next comment into anything ugly, as I am sharing a memory, not "preaching or judging." When our oldest was about 4, she was asking about all the tombstones and other decorations in our neighbors' yards, while we were out Trick or Treating. We talked about death and how some find it scary. But Christians don't have to. She accepted Jesus as her Savior that night. We have no problem with enjoying Halloween, in our own way.

That is awesome! Thanks for sharing this. I'd never thought of Halloween being a tool for someone to come to Christ. That is really neat.

A lot of churches have halloween theme parties. Some are simple with a few games and candy hand outs and some bigger churches go all out with rides. I highly recommend these if you have kids. They are very safe and usually start earlier in the day for younger kids. I've been to a few and none have ever been preachy, usually the main thing with these parties is to keep kids safe and serve as a fund raiser.

I went to a haunted house once hosted by some Christian group in my area. At the end of it they trapped you in a room and started shoving their beliefs down anyones throat that said they weren't believer.. I was brought up catholic so it was w/e, but I was there with friends who families are muslim and jewish.. it was really rude and inconsiderate of them.
RedBaron96
on 10/09/13
That should have never happened. If they want to use it as a "witnessing tool", they should ALWAYS give the option to leave before they share. Those tactics are no good and give all Christians a bad name :( I'm sorry that happened.

My family does "Light the Night." We dress up in red and green with Santa and elf hats, play Christmas music, decorate for Christmas, and give out candy canes with bible verses attached.

People think we're nuts, but hey, it's a lot of fun, and some ToTers love it.

well that is interesting! And I like your "Light the Night"! Funny that you combine santa and elves with Bible verses! I used to do something different, too, to "Light the Night" and it was humorous to see people's reactions! All in love and welcoming others.!

The only reason why I "like" Halloween is for the candy. Other than that, it's just worshiping the Devil (Satan).

Halloween traditions actually began with jack-o-lanterns, if I remember correctly. They were lit to keep evil spirits away on All Hallow's Eve, the night that the veil between our world and the spirit world was (and still is) thinnest. Another tradition to spark the idea of halloween was 'souling', an old Great Britain and Ireland tradition on All Hallow's Eve in which poor people would offer to sing to the dead in return for food or money.
It has absolutely nothing to do with Satan, that's just a silly tale made up by conservative Christians when the holiday started to spread and gain momentum in the early 1950's. Also, not everybody believes in Satan! Just food for thought.

Why don't you believe the existence of the devil? If you look back in history, you'll see how the many people he deceived. I'm a Christian, and I've, had experience with the devil when I was very little. The Bible also mentions the Satan too. Just read it. Do you believe in witch craft. Satan, the devil is behind that.

Actually, the biblical word satan comes from the Hebrew "ha satan" which means "an adversary." The fundamentalist portrayal of Satan as an independent being didn't emerge until medieval times. I am a Christian, married to a minister, and working on a MDiv myself. Your interpretation is not based in the historical or linguistic reality. There is no Satan.

And "witchcraft" is something else entirely. If you mean Wicca, they are some of the most loving and gentile people I have ever known. They believe that whatever you do in the world comes back to you seven fold. They wouldn't dare do harm to anyone.

There are two equally foolish and dangerous views of the devil:
One is that he is causing everything and you are overly focused upon his existence. The other equally foolish and dangerous view is that you do not believe that he exists. Either one of those views-- he's gotcha and you are deceived. Dead wrong.

I take it you have some hard evidence of this man's existence? Because otherwise, you're spending your life hiding from phantoms and should probably see a psychiatrist about that.

I'm not hiding from phantoms and I won't. I'm (actually God ) is giving you a opportunity. Don't refuse Him. "Draw near to God and he will draw near to your. Cleanse your hands sinners, and purify you heart you double-minded. Grieve, mourn wail. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the site of the Lord and he will lift you up." James 4: 8-10

Again, read the whole story. The author is speaking to murderers and adulterers in that passage. And it is immediately followed by something you clearly need to know more "11 Do not speak evil against one another, brothers and sisters. Whoever speaks evil against another or judges another, speaks evil against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. 12There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save and to destroy. So who, then, are you to judge your neighbour?"

I think Halloween is more than just the Devil. Many Christians feel that way. We always celebrated at our church with games and candy and celebrated the Fall, the season. The changing of seasons. You can choose to bring into it what you want.

I like candy and halloween.
But no candy have two exposed nerves.
On the right side of my mouth top and bottom.
One exposed nerve on the left side of my mouth.
Sometimes I dress up in one of my cosplay outfits.
Useually with a cosplay wig but mine are all ruined.
Cause they were put in a bag.
So just me and a cosplay outfit with my regular hair.
I used to go to the mall and tricker treat.
But they discriminate me for my age.
So the mall store staff gives me no candy.
But I know my friend tracy the manager at gamestop would.
Give me candy she is my friend.
