I believe that you should never ever do this because it show how you feel about that person that gave the gift to you in the first place.

if it was meant for me, it was meant for me; why give it away?

In the case that you can't use it it's better to give it to someone who can

How about, "Yes, because I couldn't afford to get them a gift." or, "Yes, because I forgot to get them a gift."

Some cases that might work..but I would be afraid the people who gave me the gift would wonder why they never see it when they come to visit

When I lived in Jacksonville, Fl. My neighbor's would all get together after the holidays and bring a gift we didn't like and re-gift at a huge party that was a lot of fun! I also know many teachers who re-gift gifts they get from kids. To each their own, weather it's in fun or if it's due to lack of funds. No one should be judged by anyone but God!

no, i wouldn't re-gift something that a person took their time and money to buy me. however, if i felt someone would get better use of something i was given than i would just give it to another person. re-gifting seems rather rude.

People that aren't close always give me lotion but I have very sensitive skin and lotion makes me break out so I always give it to my mother who has dry skin and goes through a lot of lotion especially in the winter when it's cold. That's about the only thing I re-gift and she knows it's re-gifted.

I don't think I ever have, but I've got nothing against it. I've given a lot to goodwill over the years.
On the other hand, the year I received a regifted calendar was pretty notable-it was from the previous year, and had been written in, lol.

I don't re-gift an item I've received for a birthday or for Christmas if I'm not all that "keen" on it ... I do a spring cleaning and a fall cleaning every year of our closets and storage and if it has not been used - then it goes to the Goodwill shop for someone else to have if they need it.

I know that a person has really listened to what I like and dislike OR "gets me" when I receive as gifts: books, unscented items such as candles, or items scented with natural essential oils such as lotion, or a gift basket of gourmet coffee . . . things that get re-gifted include florist flowers, anything perfumed with man-made chemicals or musk or patchouli scents, clothing made of wool or angora, and any food product made with artificial sweeteners or sorbitol.
ChelseBrun
on 12/13/13
Why does wool and angora get put in the same basket as artificial perfumes, fake flowers and splenda?
ChelseBrun
on 12/13/13
It works really well here in the dorms as we do secret santa or secret sister. Especially if someone doesn't know me that well, or just doesn't know my hobbies very well, and randomly gives me something I can't or don't use, it's nice to be able to pass it on to someone who will. Example: they know I like to crochet, but don't realize that I very, very rarely use acrylic yarn. I stick with cotton and wool, so when someone randomly gives me a skein of acrylic, I re-gift to crochet-ers who actually use acrylic:-)

I have regifted unused items many times. If I am not going to use something and I know someone who can, I think it's silly to let it sit around. I notice that
several people have mentioned scented bath sets...if you receive one and are allergic or don't like the scent, they make for a nice generic gifts to keep on hand. The trick is to attach a sticky note to remind you who gave it to you so that you can regift it to someone the original giver does not know when possible. I have also done this with costume jewelry sets I have been given over the years. I have a nickel allergy and cannot wear most costume jewelry.
I would never regift a used item...donating is a different story for something in good condition. In the case of clothes, having a clothing exchange with friends and family is a great way to get a new wardrobe. Everyone brings items they no longer want(in good condition, of course). The others take what they want and anything left over can be donated.

My daughter's friend got 3 rainbow looms (without receipts) for her birthday so her Mom asked if my daughter would like one for her birthday. My daughter would love one since she doesn't have one and a gift means it's yours to do with as you please. If it saves her some money and stops it from just going to waste, why not? People get hung up on some minor things, like if it's proper to give away something perfectly fine you got that you don't really need/want.

Even though I have received some gifts I didn't care for in the past, I know the person that gave it was trying to be nice. I don't re-gift. To me, it seems kinda rude. But I have taken certain items, that I know I would never use, and donated it to a charity or just given it to a person that needed it, but not as a gift.

Every year my dad would give me one of those bath sets with the bath salts and smelly body wash, I was allergic and he knew that, but it was an easy gift so he bought it anyways. Every year I resifted it to someone who I knew could use it without breaking out into hives.

If YOU thought it was stinky and didn't like it, imagine how someone else felt! I bet those bath salts are at the bottom of a dumpster somewhere stinking up the joint. Yech.

As a teacher, I often get very generic gifts from students. The thought is totally what counts, so I make a big deal of showing how excited and appreciative I am. And then I regift or donate those items that I really don't need or can't use. Last year, I got 5 salami and cheese sets. Can't eat them. I was very happy to give them to a local food pantry.

And ... according to many comments I see here.... If it's "the thought that counts" when it comes to gifts .... why is it worse to regift a present than to return it or sell it to the highest bidder -- and use that money to buy a different gift?

I know, lol it seems like some of these people keep useless stuff forever just because someone gave it to them. Well I am sorry, if I gave you a gift and you didn't like it or couldn't use it I would much rather you gift it to someone who would use it, than toss it in a box in the closet.
