I am receiving chemo this year so I ordered half of my gifts on line to avoid germs. The other half on my list will receive my homemade cookies. I buy gifts all year but I know that is not possible for some people. When I have more energy I make many of my gifts. Let us not forget.... the true gift is JESUS.

Amazon: where the the shopping is cheap and the shipping is BLEEP. Where the prices are far out til shipping's added at check out. Where the deals will make you twirl, but shipping costs will make you hurl. Where your gifts might arrive on time if you'll pay a hefty dime. Ah...Amazon.
I'll be endowing my loved ones with holiday cheer sometime between Jan.5th-29th. 2014.

Also great! (Sorry--I'm an old English teacher. Used to let things go, now I'm seeing teachers "letting things go," and feel we need role models! NOT criticizing , truly. Forgive me if that's how it came across!) On-line shopping is a life saver! You are right!

last year i received a big tray of beautifully decorated homemade christmas sugar cookies, and although they might not have costed a fortune, it was the thought and time put into them that counted, and were delicious! Just saying, that there are ways to avoid the pressure of purchasing a gift, and it helps to get into the holiday spirit as well! and i enjoyed them much more than i would of a shirt or jewelry that i will probably not wear :)

You're not kidding. I made a batch in September for a friend. The extracts alone, (vanilla, almond, etc.) were
ridiculously priced. Walnuts and chocolate morsels too, really rose in price. Home made baking is
truly a gift. The time, effort and expense says it all. Merry Christmas!

The delivery time is exceptional if you have a PRIME account, its well worth the annual fee.
I can almost find EVERYTHING I need there. If they start offering grocery delivery,I will be on board in a second!

It's a 50/50 for online and department stores. When my kids get older though it will strictly be gift cards or money. That's several years away though. Now, I have everything wrapped and even have the batteries already, except for one gift. Now that the kids are done I have to move on to everyone else. Going broke in the process. Personally I would rather not get gifts from everyone else so I didn't have to bother getting them anything, the kids are stressful enough. I wish everyone else would give the gifts of no gifts and let everyone focus on their immediate family.

I can't believe how many people on here are judging those that can't give gifts this year. It's heartbreaking really. So many are up on their soapboxes going on about how people should have been buying all year. Instead of judging, stop to think of unexpected situations. Some people think I'll start early, and every paycheck it's "Unfortunately nothing to spare" next thing they know, it's a birthday, a holiday, another birthday, big event, big event, then birthday, birthday, tragedy, unexpected event, and then suddenly it's November, and all the big holidays are right around the corner. Don't judge someone based on your ignorant opinion. I spent 36 weeks of this year pregnant. It was originally a planned pregnancy because we could afford 1 more kid. I found out at 8 weeks I was expecting 2. Do you realize how expensive it is? We were going through around $500 a month more in food than usual, and I still wasn't gaining enough becau

Your children are your gift. Don't worry about getting gifts for people. The people who actually KNOW you, and aren't soapboxing to strangers online, won't care if you don't get them a gift. They'll understand.

Exactly! You don't know what might be going on in someone else's life. For my family we decided a couple of years ago to stop buying presents and just have a family gathering to enjoy each other's company and have a big dinner. There are no children in either my or my husband' s family so we decided to not have to deal with all the stress and enjoy what Christmas is really about.

Agreed, it's sad how many judge a situation without knowing it. This is the first year in a LONG time that I've been able to buy gifts, so I'm really excited that my kids can actually have gifts from me. For the last several years, it wouldn't have mattered when I started on gifts, I still couldn't have done it. We were living at approximately 40% of the federal poverty level. This year, I'm making it a point to find useful ways to thank everyone who helped us until we could get back on our feet....because I finally can.

I have 4 boys. The twins are in the middle so I had 3 in diapers after the were born for a few months, then again when the youngest was born. It is very expensive! The food they inhale is what cost so much as the get older. Then they will start driving. No end in site. Other people don't understand that even a small amount of money spent on someone else takes away from what you can put towards your kids. Especially when your husband is unreliable like mine. I would prefer not to buy for anyone other than my boys, but get sucked into it somehow anyway. Then I stress.

There was one year we would not have had any Christmas but my husband found large amount of money laying on the floor at his work (large amount to us at least). He turned it into the supervisor and company policy states if no one claims lost property in 30 days it belongs to the finder. His supervisor gave it back after 30 days. We were very thankful.

After reading most of the comments it has just reaffirmed my position of Christmas and that we need to get back to the basics and the REAL meaning of Christmas. Go to church and forget about the gifts. As children we got very little gifts and trust me it didn't kill us. We enjoyed the holiday just the same.

PseudoRandom
on 12/15/13
Not everyone celebrates Christmas, you know. Gift giving is less important for some other holidays, particularly in families without young children. Personally, I think holiday shopping is more trouble than it's worth. I'd rather save the gift-giving for birthdays when you can focus on one person at a time.

Have you ever turned on the news and seen the unemployment rates? Even with the Obama gang skewing them low the true rate is more around 20% and higher if you take into consideration the part time workers. What is your age and are you living at home with someone else worrying about paying the bills that you can question why someone can't afford to buy gifts. When I was first married many years ago we also had lean years where we couldn't afford to buy gifts so live life as an adult and you won't have to ask that question.

People like my family... we can't afford to. Some years we can afford to make homemade goodies for people but not every year. Some years are worse than others. I make sure that we have enough for our children but it is usually just two to four gifts per child. They don't miss out too much as family gets them a few things. Plus they tend to share their toys.

You don't need money to give gifts. Give hand written vouchers for things like grass mowing, babysitting, house cleaning, car wash etc. and people will appreciate it more than a bought gift since most people already have what they need.

I am just about done with my holiday shopping. The only way I was able to purchase gifts this year was through online surveys, and most of my e-cards came from Swag Bucks. I printed the e-cards out for Kmart so I could use them in store, I used my smartphone to shop & pay in store at Target and shopped online at Best Buy. I truly hope everyone has a nice holiday.
