lets try to remember the real reason of the holidays. spending time with family and friends, giving back to others. just like God gave his only son. We should give to people who are also in need.
so I chose something i need, like soap, detergent, lotion, and my fav gift in socks and underwear. XD lol because i keep losing them or tearing them. v.v

Now days seems like all this generation thinks a wants more than needs, my late husband always told the kids, " you can want in one hand and wish in the other ans see which one gets filled the fastest. If I were in a poor financial situation, I would be very pleased to receive a grocery gift card for food, help with paying my water bill and yes even toilet paper. The little things is life are sometimes the more important things and very much appreciated gifts. If you've never been there, you wouldn't understand, I have and I do.

I live where the day time high can be as low as -15 degrees F. I have been without a winter coat for many years because I made sure my children were clothed before me. We don't have items like television and a dvd player. We do not have basic living room furniture so we primarily sit on our kitchen chairs or the floor. As for food, if people truly need food then giving it as a gift is truly appreciated. I have been there. We tend to get a giant pack of toilet paper, a huge can of coffee, bottles of multivitamins for both children and adults and bottles of juice for our family each year. I have no clue who gets them but they are left at my husbands desk every year. Trust me these items are valuable to many people. Oh and so are toothbrushes, toothpaste, hair ties, diapers and the like. Santa ALWAYS puts a tube of toothpaste in each stocking with a toothbrush. It sounds like you have never experienced true poverty and I hope you never do. It is scary

As a kid, my dad always tried to make me feel guilty for everything he bought me. Every gift, every school necessity, every bite of food I put into my mouth was something I only got because he busted his tail to earn it. My Mom felt ashamed just asking him to buy us kids underwear or socks once a year. He had a need to make those around him feel bad for what he "had to give us". It went far beyond "show appreciation", he wanted us to get on our knees and grovel. A genuine thank you was never enough for him. So as an adult, I now hate receiving gifts from anyone because I feel they should put their hard earned money into something they need, not waste it on me. He made me feel unworthy of everything I got growing up and now I want nothing from anyone if I can help it.

I think gift cards are OK in a one-way gifting situation, like a birthday or Christmas, but I've never understood it in a gift exchange situation. I mean, if I give my sister-in-law a gift card, and she gives me one ... well, why not just keep the money we used to buy the gift cards and spend it on ourselves in the first place? Also, my husband's family (who are the only people in my life who celebrate Christmas) makes a big deal out of the gift exchange. It starts at midnight on Christmas morning and last a couple of hours, with each person opening gifts one at a time and everyone oohing and ahing over them. Would kinda take the fun out of it to do gift cards. But every family and situation is different. If it works for you, awesome.

Originally Christmas was about giving needs to the needy including family and children and celebrating what you have (plus Christ of course). Now its a free for all and it sort of crushes the original purpose behind the giving aspect of Christmas. But I simply 'fix' my issue with this and stay out of stores as much as possible this time of year. It makes me panic and feel like a bad parent for only having a few toys per each child instead of 20 or so per child. I do what I can and they always have a happy day. :)

I have to agree, that when everyone take Christ out of Christmas that then they forget the true meaning of why we haave Christmas in the first place. I was taught that it is not the presents we get but it is Christs Birthday. So when I had my kids I decided to get them I gift they wanted. Then somethings I know they needed. Then their stockings. I had two kids So I never spent more than 50. on them. and I tried to do it during the year so it wasn't all that bad. Stockings I did by my self for my husband and the 2 kids. We never bought expensive presents for them. Crochetor

You need to chill out a little bit. It is quite possible to want what you need. Like this Christmas? I'm capable of wanting luxury items. (I won't get them, but I don't generally get gifts on a regular basis anyway, so whatever.) Two Christmases ago? I very much wanted food for my gifts, because I couldn't buy any. I can't imagine anyone that would say I couldn't both want AND need food at the same time.

need |n?d|
verb [ trans. ]
1 require (something) because it is essential or very important : I need help now | [with present participle ] this shirt needs washing | [with infinitive ] they need to win tomorrow.
• ( not need something) not want to be subjected to something : I don't need your sarcasm.
2 [as modal verb ] [with negative or in questions ] expressing necessity or obligation : need I say more? | I need not have worried.
3 [ intrans. ] archaic be necessary : lest you, even more than needs, embitter our parting.

I don't know Kellyrulz but she may want the needs of water, clothing (the basics not in excess), and a warm shelter (her heater may be broken and she lives somewhere with cold winters). So to say she can't need her wants may be incorrect. It really depends on her living situation.

I have known people that wanted to just have food on their table for Christmas. I would think that is clearly a need. Others just need heat, from the cold, or lights, where their power has been shut off. Those are needs. There are times when the wants to fall into the same category as the needs. Last Christmas (and this one also) I want my daughter to still be alive to celebrate Christmas. Maybe that's not a need to some people, but it sure is to me. I've already had my oldest son pass away (at the hands of my ex-husband) and I'm desperate to hold on to my daughter for every single day possible.

pinkwildcard liked this
well. actually those aren't needed. You don't need to wipe after going... you don't need to wash clothes... you don't need a vehicle, thus not needing gas cards.... you also don't need stamps..

ALL you need to live is FOOD, WATER AND SHELTER. Those are the basic and ONLY needs of any living thing. Anything else is a WANT.

sadly, you should've learned this in animal science, biology, or even economics.

Society tells you that you need the things you listed, when in reality... you don't.

This right here tells you how much society affects your daily life =)

Exactly! Anything truly useful is a wonderful gift. :) Yes toilet paper is sort of a 'use once then toss out' but the reality of trying to recycle that is from my knowledge... not yet possible. ;) I stopped using laundry detergent and am just using classic Ivory soap. Its just over $1 for 3 bars. I simply grate it into each load before I start it... I also toss in some baking soda if clothes are smelly. I toss in some washing soda if there are some stains... if they are deep stains I will use both washing and baking soda. Our clothes have NEVER felt so wonderful! Soft, scentless and shockingly stains come out. If we have clothes and I need to be careful of the colors I add in some coarse sea salt. Cheapest laundry soap going. :) Well unless you are able to snag free soap somehow. ;)
