Many years ago, before they discovered how dangerous is was to be under all the ultra-violet lights, my friend and I would go faithfully once a week.

In high school for prom. It was just for one month before junior prom and one month before senior prom...but looking back it was stupid. Not only harmful, but a giant waste of money. With age comes wisdom... I did not tan for my wedding.

BTW, I am super pale, as in, people make jokes about it, yet I embrace my pale-ness. I'm married to a brown man. We appreciate each others' skin tones without trying to emulate one another.

How is it sad? Something as shameful as a tanning bed deserves not to be known..

Tanning beds are idiotic. Let's just pay to get cancer, shall we? I feel the same way about laying out. I aviod sun like the plague. I'd rather not look like an old piece of leather when I'm older
nicknick119
on 12/21/13
You do need some sun. It is important for absorbing vitamin D. But if you go outside during the day it should be plenty

I have an acquaintance who is 37 (I am 34), and because of tanning, she seriously looks to be about 10 years older than I do. In addition to that, she smokes like a fiend. Looks like that old wrinkly woman in the Hallmark cards, except also tan! Yuck!

Exactly! I'm 34, and look to be in my mid-20's. A friend is the same age, and is already covered in wrinkles... She's been mistaken for her teen-aged children's grandmother before. On top of that, she's the same color as her purse. Yuck. No thank you.
And she keeps telling me how tanning makes her look so much younger and healthy lol

I used to go tanning because I had a vitamin D deficiency. My doctor put me on 50,000 milligrams a week. The pills made me nauseous so I went to a tanning facility, and used the higher level beds. My levels returned to normal and I felt healthier and better because of it. I went once or twice every week, and I plan on doing the same thing this winter. I am extremely fair skinned, and cannot go out into the sun without burning. However, when I am in a tanning bed, I can control the amount of UV rays I am exposed to, and so far I have never gotten burned in a tanning bed. If used properly, they can be beneficial.

I haven't been tanning for years, but I used to go faithfully. I had a scare with a mole once, turned out to be benign. thank goodness. but I feel its safer to tan in the tannign beds than outside in the sun. it is controlled time at a salon. you can only go for so many minutes & have to wait 24hrs before you can go again. at least here in Illinois. if your an outdoor tanning person, you can lay out all day everyday & its more dangerous.

UV radiation is bad for your skin no matter where or how long you are exposed to it. The UV rays do not care if you are in the tanning bed for 15 minutes, or an hour. UV damage is the same whether it comes from the sun or a tanning bed. Just because you only go to the tanning bed for a few minutes every 24 hours, doesn't mean that is safer. Boy are you delusional!! Not only does it cause cancer, it also ages your skin, no matter how long you are in the sun or tanning bed, sun damage is sun damage.

I've never used one but only because I'm too young and the reason why I would like to just a few times is not because I hate being pale its just that every blemish and red spot looks a hundred times worse on pale skin and even make-up don't cover-up everything.

It is hard to understand why tanning beds have not been banned considering the health risk they pose. When I was a teenager, it was known that using a tanning bed/booth caused premature aging, although the risk of cancer was downplayed at that time. My older sister was teased all her life for never tanning and looking so pale; now, the tables are turned as she looks more late-thirties than her fifty-four years-of-age. All the tanned "goddesses" of our youth look old and haggard with their "shoe-leather" skin. Spray-tan is the easy solution.

I still get mistaken for my 21 year old daughters sister and I'm almost 46, been a tanning bed user for almost 20 years, so how do you explain that? There's so much mis-information about tanning beds and the sun out there, it's unbelieveable!

Back in my younger days. As to the fecal mater, the beds I went to were sanitized after each use and sanitizing spray was available in each room.

Several years ago, there was a study done of a lot of the upscale tanning salons in the NY area. A majority of the beds had traces of fecal matter on them. Eww YUCK!I think I'd rather be pale.
