Who needs the gym when there's a forest to run through?! :D
You can do pull ups on branches and climb trees and there's always fresh air and it never gets boring.
That, and you're the only one out there. It's personal.

Hah, I live next to a trail & there are plenty of deer, hanging out sometimes on or right next to the path. Never got ticks, knock on wood. And once while biking, a perv was sitting on a bench full out "pleasuring" himself as I rode by. I was pissed he ruined my enjoying nature moment & was forced to the reality of living in the big city w creeps. But still, this doesn't prevent me from going out on the trail. :-D

Honestly reading the comments are kind of pissing me off. Gyms are too expensive? You think $30-$50 a month is more expensive than the THOUSANDS you'll have to spend on healthcare because you're unhealthy? You think you body isn't worth $30-$50 a month?
jchizick
on 02/04/13
I agree most of these people don't value physical and mental health. They would rather deny and make excuses which is typical. But when they see me walking down the street one thing is for sure they'll be mirin'
Vigasan
on 02/04/13
I didn't mean that not going to the gym is a bad thing. I meant expense shouldn't be the only reason to say no. Places like YMCA will lower the fee down to $10-$15 if you show them your bank statement before signing up so they can see that you can't afford the regular fee.

Working at home is great, I'm all for it. But nothing beats competing with people you see at the gym on a regular basis. Going to the gym also allows you to meet other active people from where you can learn a great deal and maybe even network out and find out about job opportunities.

Not everyone can get to a gym and not everyone has ANY extra money left after the bills are paid. I live on a tiny fixed income and I have 24/7 total care of my mama who has dementia, so a gym is out of the question for me. I do, however, have a Crossbow gym (sorta like a BowFlex) and a Giselle glider that I use all the time at home. I also have LOADS of videos covering everything from Yoga to aerobics....all for FREE....I can and do stream on my Roku box.

That said, just because you go to a gym does NOT mean you are healthy if you're eating GMOs, HFCS, artificial sweeteners, food laden with pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, preservatives, hormones, low dose antibiotics, steroids, Omega 6 high fats, trans fats, foods stripped of their nutrition and then chemical *equivalents* added back in, etc. Being physically fit is a good thing, but it won't save you if you're still consuming trash, even if the label says it's *good for you*.

Gyms are too expensive...especially when you can run and stuff at home....for, get this....free! I work out daily and go on runs and all that and I'm perfectly healthy and fit and never once have I paid for an overrated, unnecessary gym fee.

It's possible to lose a lot of weight without a gym membership. Out of the 140 lbs I lost altogether last year only 10 of it was while I had a gym membership. I hit a plateau at that point and joined to try to lose the last 20 lbs, but ended up pregnant before hitting my goal. While it's great that some people are able to exercise for free without a gym, I do still recommend having a gym membership because they have equipment I could never afford or fit into my tiny apartment. Plus it gave me somewhere safe to go to exercise on days the temps were too high during the summer.

im not surprised that 70% of people don't go to the gym regularly...many people work out at home or just go out for a quick run, its much easier than going all the way to they gym. Why go somewhere to do something, when you can do it at home?

Let's not stereotype that those of us who make a priority of physical fitness and utilize a gym are therefore wealthy. It's rude and ignorant. Planet fitness is $10 a month. That's about the cost of one trip through the drive-thru or one ticket for the movies. You spend your money on what's important to you. Don't judge those of us who choose to spend a very small amount of money every month in order to have unlimited access to fitness equipment.

Fine but DO NOT stereotype those of us that do not go to the gym. Yes I do spend my money on what's important to me the rent, the light bill, water bill, and gas for my truck so I can go to work. Not everyone has the extra money to spend on a ticket to the movies or the drive-thru.

I haven't seen any negative comments yet about ppl who don't go to the gym (if there are I haven't gotten to them and read them yet or just missed them), but there are a lot of comments saying anyone who goes to the gym is being ripped off and must be doing financially well and has a lot of extra money to spend and so forth. I don't go to the gym bc my family/neighbors have a full home gym and brings in a personal trainer so we freeload off of them. That's what family is for ; ) jk I can see dmsmith4409's point of view but can see yours as well about a lot of people struggle to get bills paid and don't have extra money for movie tickets, gym memberships, and other nonessentials.

A lot of people workout at home or outside the gym. Not everyone can afford it or some like to be outdoors when exercising or like to workout privately and the reasons go on and on. Just bc you don't go to the gym doesn't mean you're not exercising and are not fit. Now I see why some ppl were getting upset about people assuming that not going to the gym meant they were fat, unfit, lazy, etc. You're generalizing and making too many assumptions and I don't think Jesus would do that and wouldn't approve, JesusSaves97.

Gyms are a scam designed to take money from lazy people who feel guilty about not exercising but not SO guilty that they're willing to get off their butts and actually exercise.

The gym gets a healthy membership fee, and the mark gets to rationalise their laziness by telling themselves they belong to a GYM so they're totally gonna exercise every day starting in the near future.

Personally, I find the gym boring. Running in the same place for an hour holds very little appeal for me. Plus, my self-consciousness seems to guide me right next to the seasoned professional. I'm definitely not against being fit. I like playing tag with the kids, dancing, and playing pick up games of soccer and volleyball. I don't see why adults can't be active in the same way as kids. Its much more fun for me, at least.

Kids need to start working out at the gymn. American children these days seem to be so infatuated with their electronic devices, living in a bubble, and they never get out and experience the world. Everything they encounter must be, somehow, internet accessible--If it doesn't have internet, they don't like it. They go on Facebook, Chat Roulette, and many other sites they probably shouldn't be exposed to yet. Their childhoods, in a sense, are actually being stripped away from them. But, what if kids could work out physically on the internet? Light Bulb!

Oh, that's right, they probably still wouldn't. They'd rather go on iFunny or look up memes.

I run outside or on the treadmill in my basement 3-4 days a week (25-30 miles/week) and I use my exercise bike 2-3 days for 40-60 minutes. Sometimes I walk for 45-60 minutes instead of the bike if it's nice out and it's not a running day. I also lift handweights and do some other strength training. I don't, however, belong to a gym; so I chose "I don't go to the gym." Not going to "the gym" does not necessarily equal not exercising.
