No where for the past few months, but going out of town just for the day on Christmas day. 1/2 hours there, visit for about 4 hours, then 2 1/2 hours back. Not really looking forward to that long drive, but it's the only way to get to see the kids & grandchildren for Christmas.

that should have been 2 1/2 hours to get there & 2 1/.2 hours to get back.

To my brother's for Thanksgiving, and to my parents' for Christmas. Tough because we live in an area where everyone has family surrounding them whereas we are always flying solo with babysitting and whatnot. But we are all within two hours of each other, at least. We host Easter, and a lot of other kid-driven events, though. It all works out. Could be worse for sure.

It has been 20 years since I had my son home for Christmas and it was also his choice, BUT his choice was to join the military so he is either over seas in some "undisclosed " location, war zone or the one year he was in the country he was 3000 miles away and couldn't fly here because his wife was due to deliver their child. We couldn't travel there because my husband was getting chemo and radiation. HOPEFULLY next year we can be together for the holidays IF he decides to retire.

This will be my 3rd Christmas without seeing my 30 year old son. It is his choice to have removed himself from association with the family.
I would love to see him, but, I have to respect his wishes.. {:o(

My sympathies for the time you haven't seen your son. However, look at the upside, there is at least always hope you will see him. My son passed away a few years back. I won't see him again until I pass. So, I am sure you can see, there is reason in your case to hold out hope of seeing your son. Make the best of your Holidays, even though they may be challenging. Believe me, it's better than staring at pictures and crying, like my daughter and I have been doing for weeks now.

Sorry to hear "dalgal21" about not seeing your son in twenty years and you said it was his choice, but it also sounds to me you're making excuses for him. He is a grown man with his own family, but he is in charge of making his own decisions. Unfortunately it was never on his priority list to see his mom and dad because I don't believe for one minute that he wasn't able to do that or they (military) never gave him any free time to see his family? He is lucky that you guys are still alive and perhaps and "hopefully" he will make it a priority to see his parents. I think it's awful, wow 20 years? He should know that life is too short...I do thank him for fighting for our country...:)

was he raised to respect and believe in God? if not there may be a clue, did you give him room to mature? there are many reasons that he has chosen this path. maybe a meeting with you and him with a pastor could iron this out. couldn';t hurt.

Maybe he just wants his own Christmas traditions? We stay home for Christmas. No way would I spend it with my mother in law or traveling. Home, me, dh and kids, that's the only place for us. Not fair to kids to pack them up. Not fair to me or dh to travel.

At least this isn't Facebook... a friend of mine's mother had her house broken into when she posed on that she was going to Rochester. Nothing was stolen, but I would have felt totally violated if I were in her position.

I'm sorry your parents are gone. Mine are too. Although they've both been gone for quite a few years, I still miss them both a lot. We were from Westchester in NY. Especially my Dad and I used to be really close so I know how you feel. You try to enjoy your Christmas though, it gets easier as time passes. Know that people are in the same boat as you!

I lost my father last November and my mother in February 2011. This time of year can be hard when I'm at the store and see something that I would have gotten them. I try to focus on my own children and others who are still here as much as I can. Merry Christmas to all who celebrate.
