Great nurses know when they can take care of it without having to see a doctor and know when it's necessary to go see a doctor. Saved myself a lot of money over the years.

I might do any one of those, but what I will do is ramp up on water, B-vitamins and C, and sleep. If that doesn't make inroads, then I'll decide which thing to do- otc meds, homeopathic remedies, or the doctor, next. These days, most of the things I'm exposed to [aside from at work] are viral, so no antibiotics will help anyway, so unless it moves on to bronchitis there's no need for the MD anyway.

But my biggest & best tool is prevention. Hand-washing, cart-wipes at the grocery market, gel hand cleaner when I'm out at the ATM or places like that, & tissues for blowing my nose. I'd be interested in a poll for that- maybe I'll make one!

the drug companies make out like bandits!! makes me sick (no pun intended lol) go back to grandma's home remedies or Doctor Health's magic elixir (will cure anything because of the amount of alcohol in it lol) seriously though natural remedies work really well as long as you are careful what u mix.

If I can tough it out, do it. If not, take something. Mostly just sleep.

And for the 10% that use homeopathic remedies, have you heard about the homeopath? He drank a glass of water and died of an overdose of everything.

I'm a big advocate of letting a fever burn. As long as it's not dangerously high, I challenge myself to tough it out a bit longer, maybe only take acetaminophen or ibuprofen right before bed so I can sleep comfortably. As a result, I get rid of colds and flus faster than the rest of my family sick with the same thing. Here's an article on the issue: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/11/111101130200.htm

By sticking it out until I am better, I haven't been sick in years, your immune system is stronger, rather than relying on drugs either over the counter or prescription in my humble opinion, I am healthy and I don't see a doctor regularly

The answers are not good for this question. A better answer would have been Natural Remedies. Homeopathic is specific, yet it seems the answer makes it cover a broader spectrum.

Homeopathic remedies work really well, as long as you take them the minute the symptoms start to show. Otherwise I pretty much just wait till it goes away :)

No, they don't. They're just a placebo. That is not how medicine works.
dboylonnie
on 01/16/13
How does medicine work? Oh, you're referring to prescription medication, which is created, produced, and manufactured from a room full of sales associates that actually have little or no medical experience, who create medications that are meant to sell and make a profit, not make you feel better. No doctor anywhere(or anyone with any medical training for that matter) takes the time to study, produce, and manufacture a drug for a major populace, as most people with medical training are day-to-day doctors or scientists whom play a large role in the research and understanding of many illnesses that we face everyday. If you want to see who makes your medicine, just search for "Pfzier", which is one of the largest providers of pharmaceuticals to the US and many other countries, which is devised of a team of "researchers" who decide what drugs to manufacture and to whom they are targeted. Why do you think prescription medication has such a large amount of problematic sid

Placebos only work if the person knows it is going to work. A few weeks ago I had a cold, and nothing was working. NyQuil would work for an hour then I would wake up coughing, so my boyfriend told me to try coldcalim. That was what his mom use to give him. He got it for me, and I went to work, and even made a bet that if it did work I would give him $20. A day later I was giving him my money. I still had a cough, but all my other systems were gone. It was unbelievable!
GinNJuiceBetch

They aren't just placebo effects.. a lot of homeopathic remedies have herbs and other natural ingredients that are scientifically proven or connected with positive side affects described by said remedies.. But then again; some are just hogwash hippie nonesense.. I do know ginger root is effective in settling motion sickness; or nausea..hence gingerale being sipped on with a queasy stomach. That's not to say phenagren doesn't work just as well; being a true "medicine"..but side effects are greater; i.e. drowsieness where as ginger doesn't have any except maybe a refreshing taste sensation. Juuust...sayin.

I know someone who had to take her daughter to the dr. just because she woke up one morning with a fever. THERE IS NOTHING A DR. CAN DO FOR A VIRUS! It's called, our bodies have to fight it off itself. It takes our bodies 7-10 days to fight off a viral infection. If you or your child hasn't gotten better by then (the 7-10 days) then most likely you have a bacterial infection and it's time to go to the dr. to get a prescription for antibiotics. If you go to the dr. before then, then the dr. can't know if it is a virus or a bacteria because not enough time has gone by to rule out a virus.

You are absolutely correct- with one exception. If the fever is unusually high (over 101-102F,) and sudden, with chills, etc. It could be a sign of a serious bacterial infection, and IV antibiotics might be necessary.
This happened to me once- I got my teeth cleaned and two days later, I was shaking and hallucinating from a high fever because my half in/ half out wisdom teeth became infected. My Mom forced me to go to the ER, and they treated me immediately and said I could have died without the antibiotics (infection so near your brain and lymph nodes and all).
I think I'd be dead about 3 times over if not for modern medicine and I'm 38!

My brother used to pop pain killers whenever he thought he might have a headache. It got to the point where he would take twice the maximum recommended dose and still complain all day. Turned out the numbnuts was just always dehydrated, but after years of that, painkillers don't work for him anymore. Moral: Just drink water and do something to take your mind off it. Burning all your money on pills doesn't do you any favors.
