I did all the chores in the house (aside from yard work and cooking dinner) and only got 50 cents in the 90s! I always wished for siblings to help out.

I just got money from my parents whenever I needed it. Still at 22 my parents give me money randomly when they're feeling generous.

I'm older now, but all through college and grad school my parents sent me money randomly to get by. I appreciated it more then than I ever did when I was a kid. You don't really value a surprise $20 until you're used to working for $7 an hour, lol.

Even if I got a 100% on my test or a report card full of A's my parents didn't care. They just expected it out of me. This is sad but true. Feel lucky if your parents even gave you a dollar for you doing good in school because not all kids had that privilege. Lesson: Never take anything for granted. Have a great night all.

WOW I am SOOOO shocked that people do not teach their kids abut money. My son is 5 and we already have The Allowance Game. The whole idea of an allowance is to teach responsibility.

My mother taught me how to handle money!! I didn't need an allowance to learn! I know how to budget, pay bills, write a check, and save. My parents didn't use credit cards and loans (except for a mortgage) so if we didn't have the cash, we didn't get it! I learned way more than most of the people I know.

Too bad they could have taught you how to use money if they used credit cards which are a great financial tool.

Same here. My mother was a great money manager and taught me well. The only money I had was money I'd get from birthdays and - when I got old enough - babysitting.

When I see what some kids get for allowance these days, I start to feel OLD!!! I was born in 1982. Aren't I a bit too young to start feeling old?

Ur way too young to feel old & this is coming from a 22 yr old. Times change quick. Kids today are so much different & brought up so much differently than I was & I was brought up in the 90's & early '00s.

This was a hard question for me to answer. When I was younger my mom & dad didn't give us allowance. We did our chores & they felt that we were part of the family so we shared in the chores that needed to be done in the household. After my mom died & my dad gave up my brother & me to my aunt & uncle, we started getting allowances for helping out. I would usually get about $20 a week for folding clothes, taking care of my dogs (bathing, feeding, etc), vacuuming, keeping my room cleaned & dusted & vacuumed. When I knew I was going to get a reward, I was more enthusiastic about my chores & took more pride in them. Also having allowance, taught me to manage money.

I was allowed to keep whatever change I found while cleaning up. I managed to save up $70 and bought my first new bicycle (always had hand-me-downs.) That was a lot of money and it was a fancy bike for back then!

What allowance? We had a small (25 rooms) motel.. and were expected to work - clean, wash, office, yard, paint. If it needed to be done - we did it. When it came time for school - we were given one of the catelogs (we lived away from 'the city') and told how much we could 'spend' for school clothes. No exception. oh - that would be tax included. So - no, we didn't have an allowance - but we sure learned about money and it's worth.

Why are most people assuming kids are getting an allowance for doing nothing?! I had chores, if I didn't do them, I didn't get the allowance. This is generally how the allowance system works.

EXACTLY!!!!! Mom and Dad earned money for working outside of the home, or at homebased businesses they ran, and as children too young to go to work we earned money for helping Mom with the chores. Some parents argued that one should not have to pay kids to do chores. However my parents both saw this as an awesome way to instill a work ethic in us, and teach us about money,. IT WORKED!!

I chose that I didn't get anything but I guess I should have chose not monetary! We had chores that we were expected to complete. if we completed them we got to do things we wanted on the weekends. Such as going to friends houses or having time time to play video games or phone privileges. If we didn't complete them we got grounded and still had to do them!
