America- North America. They are so many great things to see in America, why go elsewhere?

because why would you stay in one place your whole life? How boring. Hear a new language, experience a new culture, expand your mind. The world does not rotate around north america.

See where your ancestors came from it's your history too, unless you're 100% native north american indian.

Uhm... Maybe because not everyone is so closed minded that they think there is only one good country to visit?
I have seen pretty much everything here... but nothing comes close to the Mayan ruins in Mexico or the Buddhist villages is Tibet. Learn about world history, world religions, different landscapes... don't think that only America has good things to see. There is a world to explore.

True Kathy normally I'd agree with you. I love America, but since the trip would be free I would go somewhere I wouldn't plan on spending my money normally.

That's kind of interesting! America is a pretty big place after all! Especially since the U.S.A. is the world's melting pot! There's so many different kind of cultures here and so many places to see! Though, I wouldn't mind travelling across the ocean every once in a while! ;) No matter how much there is in the U.S. the rest if the world has so much to offer! And I can't just give that up! :P

I have been to many different countries. I don't believe you would be putting yourself at risk anymore more than you do here. Just get a good layout of where you are staying, and you're good to go. There is danger here too.

Although I don't fully agree with you, you're right; there are pretty amazing things to see in the US. Some in my part of the country are the Anasazi ruins, Mesa Verde in southern Colorado, Death Valley in California, which is several hundred feet below sea level, the giant redwoods in northern CA, the Sonoran Desert with all the saguaro in Arizona, the petrified forest in AZ/CA, the grand canyon, the black canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado, which is deeper than the Grand Canyon, the continental divide (which is pretty cool to see - you can even hike along it). Arches in...Utah? There is a lot of Native American history going back well before the European settlers arrived.

How does her comment make her sound closed minded. And naive? Do you even know the meaning of the word? I believe you could spend a lifetime exploring the US and not see it all. Then there is Canada. And South America is lumped in with N. America and it is amazingly diverse. I believe that lots of everything means not much of anything.

close minded because they said why would i go anywhere? there are things to see here. there is so much more to see than just north america. A free trip and you choose to stay home basically.

South America is not lumped in with N. America. Central America is lumped in with S.America and is called Latin America.

I'm pretty sure you can't get any more closed-minded than saying "why go elsewhere?" It IS naive to think that the only things worth seeing are the ones in your own backyard. There are worthwhile things to see everywhere.

Speaking of knowing the meaning of a word, you seem to be confused about the word "diverse." You said that South America is "amazingly diverse" and therefore worth seeing, but other places that have "lots of everything" don't have anything much to see. Please clarify.

I don't want to go elsewhere because there are crazy things that go on elsewhere. I do not feel that the sights are worth going "elsewhere." Call me what you want. I know things go on here, but if you are kidnapped or arrested or hurt in other countries, the probability of you ever coming home is very slim. I just don't find it worth it.

I agree, and with a "there's no place like home" kind of appreciation. I love to travel, but I also find people who don't pretty fascinating. And that's a way bigger disparity than traveling the globe vs. traveling within one's hemisphere! How cool is it when you meet a 90-year old who's never left New York (or the area around his/her small town in Tennessee, or a historic gold rush town in California, etc.). They have a whole other perspective on life and usually especially on family/family history.

Maybe if you were going with some volunteer organization you could ask other people for donations for your travel expenses to support you financially. Others might be inclined to give if they knew you were going there to help people. Just an idea/thought! :)

I'm blown away that more people didn't say Africa! I love the music of Senegal and South Africa and would love to hear it in it's native land. I would also love to go on safari and do some kind of work vacation where I could help those in need. If I didn't have young children, I would so do a missionary trip to Africa with my church!
