Established in 1954, The HSUS seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals—a world that will also benefit people. We are America's mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation and neglect, as well as the most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond. Our mission statement: Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty. On the web at humanesociety.org.

The Swag Bucks you donate all this month will be turned into a cash donation, given directly to The Humane Society of the United States. Every Swag Buck you donate will help us in supporting all our furry, finned and flying friends!

Every Swag Bucks donated equals $0.01, so donating 1,000 Swag Bucks is equivalent to donating ten dollars.

You all are great people for donating, but I really do recommend donating to your local shelter instead. Thanks for what you guys do, let's make animals just as important as us!

Whether it's for our local animal shelter or somewhere else, there is an animal being helped. Doesn't matter where.

Is there a way to suggest different animal charities to Swagbucks? Some place that's more reputable?

HSUS just got their charity rating on Charity Navigator revoked. They are now listed with a "Donor Advisory", because $15.75 million of their money is going towards paying a court settlement for racketeering and bribery (May 2014).

It's also come out that they moved $26 million to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. And there 2009 paperwork showed that ONLY 0.8% of their funds went towards shelters - which is rather deceiving considering that 85% of their fundraising suggests otherwise.

I should preface this with the fact that I think it's wonderful how so many of you are donating your hard-earned swagbucks to help these animals. However, I think it's important for people to know where their money (or in this case swagbucks) are going. I do not mean to undermine any of your generous donations, because I am sure they all come from the heart with the fullest intention to help those in need.

HSUS is not what they appear to be. They are not affiliated with pet shelters, they do not run spay/neuter programs, they do not take in abused or homeless pets. They do offer grants to pet shelters, as documented in their 2010 tax paperwork, and this amounted to less than 1% of their budget (0.418% to be specific). HSUS raises enough money to finance animal shelters in every single state, with money to spare, yet they don't operate a single one.

Their CEO made $287,786 in total compensation in 2010 (to put that in perspective - that's more than half of what they gave to shelters that year). In 2013, their CEO made $395,000 in total compensation. In 2010, 29 of their employees made over $100,000. In 2010, 38 employees earned over $100,000. 37% of their 2010 total budget went towards fundraising. 41% of their 2013 total budget went to fundraising.

This is why is go with my Walmart card and by pet food and take it right to a shelter in need. Its the only way you know that that money is being given to the animals. Its so sad to see people abusing funds for animals that can't speak for themselves. Thank you for your info. Keep up and keep spreading the words of truth.

Sorry that I can't type so well b/c Swagbucks has this "how can we help you?" In the middle of my screen and I can't see what I typing until its to late.

In 2012, the Massachusetts Attorney General reported that HSUS solicitation campaigns in the state netted $0 for animals. The California Attorney General reported that HSUS solicitation campaigns raised 1.8 million, and of that only 4% went towards helping animals.

In addition, it has been said by several executives that HSUS's goals include eliminating recreational hunting, and abolishing animal agriculture. They have spent thousands, if not millions on programs to try to create regulations to eliminate dairy, cheese, and meat.

The best way you can help these animals in need and pets in shelters is to give to your local shelters.

Is this true? I should have read your comments before donating then. lol. Maybe it's best to redeem it for the paypal cash and then buy whatever the animal shelter needs. The animal shelter in my town is weird. I send them a check and they never want it. They usually email me with a supply list instead. I think, if what you say about HSUS is true, then this may not be the best option to give.

Unfortunately, it's true. I was donating to HSUS through swagbucks every single day until I found out about this. I think you've got a great idea with how to still support local animals with donating items for your local shelter. I'll have to do that too.

There's a lot of resources that back up my statements above. I got some of it through their tax papers, some through "HumaneWatch" a website that's dedicated to exposing HSUS's practices, and some through articles I've read.

If you'd like to find out more, the Center for Consumer Freedom has a list of "9 Things You Didn't Know About HSUS" that's pretty informative. http://www.consumerfreedom.com/2012/01/9-things-you-didnt-know-about-hsus/

Hey, it's the thought and your heart that matter! God says when you give from your heart - even if it's a few pennies - and it's all you have it's like giving more than a person who gives $100 but gives hesitantly and for the wrong reasons! He will reward those who give - no matter if it's a penny or a million bucks. He looks to the heart first! My hats off to you :)

A free book to meat free eating from HSUS. http://www.humanesociety.org/forms/guide_to_vegetarian_eating.html

Another interesting thing I found was Humane Choice pet food. It's vegetarian dog and cat food from the humane society.
on 10/01/12
1225grl and 7 others liked this
Personally I find it cruel to deny a dog or cat what their bodies have evolved to consume, namely meat as they are carnivores. We humans, as omnivores, have a choice if we eat meat or not, again our choice. This is another problem that I have with HSUS, and moreso PETA. It's one thing to cajole meat eaters to adopt a vegetarian or even vegan lifestyle, it's imho a crime to force animals to eat what they are not suppose to.
on 08/21/14
Dogs don't need to eat meat, they are omnivores like humans.
Cats need to eat meat as they need an amino acid that is destroyed in processing, that is why they need meat. Dogs can eat cat food, but if cats ate only dog food they would eventually die.
on 10/02/12
alexm27 and 1 others liked this
Do some research, dogs evolved from herbivores, cats evolved from carnivores. Unless you believe that they didn't evolve and came over on the Arc.
on 08/21/14
Cats are still carnivores, they didn't evolve from carnivores. Top of the food chain, then as now.

I can assure you I have researched this topic extensively and even said "what their bodies 'evolved' to consume". Your assessment that dogs evolved from herbivores is inaccurate I'm afraid.

Dogs and Cats are broken down specifically from caniforms and feliformes respectively. They are both taxonomically organized as the order Carnivora. Both dogs and cats can be traced to the family from which they diverged Miacoidea, the first carnivores. Their was a proto-dog-ancestor Miacis amongst this group, Their skull morphology (shape) indicates they both evolved to eat meat, i.e. canine teeth. I could say we all evolved from eukaryotes, but like your statement that dogs evolved from herbivores, would be a red herring.

Sorry if that was a little lengthy, but I have an impulse to substantiate things with established facts, and empirical evidence.

Please donate to your LOCAL SHELTERS!

HSUS has NOTHING to do with pet rescue/rehabilitation/adoption! It is not 'The Humane Society' that runs your local shelters. HSUS is a political group a la PETA, just in suits.

Keep politics out of Swagbucks charities, please!!!

I mean, right on that those who are giving to any animal shelters or charities. If this is the only way to do it (with our swag bucks) then so be it. If other shelters like local ones don't accept swag bucks, we can't help that. True animal lovers will make huge sacrifices for all animals. Let's see more local shelters do business with Swag Bucks - Swaggernauts! We should all contact these local shelters and ask them to do business with Swag Bucks! Then we can directly help our local animals :)

Be careful of those who say that the Humane Society is a bad charity. The sources they use are sketchy at best. Remember that there are some who see the Humane Society through a political lense. Upon research you'll find that the biggest critics of the Humane Society are from conservative-leaning groups/sites/publications/etc. The Humane Society is obviously not pro-hunting for sport and they have endorsed President Obama so they obviously have political enemies.

If you want to know more about them, simply go here to read about what they stand for and also read about some of their mistakes/controversies as well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humane_Society_of_the_United_States

I still donated since they really do a lot of good for animals.

And this is a good charity that does much for animals, if you know anything about the humane society, you would know how much they do for animals and people as a whole. I personally work at one of their animal shelters, and we save countless animal's lives and give homeless pets a new home. Try reading the site's description before you say how bad a charity is. Please donate and help change the world.
