A connection of grocery or market chains was born out of the market crash of 1929. The Mayfair Connection (as it was known) combined Mayfair Markets and California Van Markets to create a more extensive chain of Mayfair Markets. The chain extended through several western states into the 1960s. Upscale or luxury markets were created, and those eventually became Gelson’s, the first of which opened in 1951. Today, there are 27 Gelson’s, primarily in higher-end California neighborhoods.
