George C. Shaw opened a small retail store in 1860 in Portland, Maine. The store carried about 100 items and didn’t support local farmers. Maynard A. Davis took care of that in 1919 by buying the market and making it a subsidiary of his company called Brockton Public Markets, which relied on local farmers for their produce supply. Over the years, Shaw’s Supermarkets expanded and even added Star Market to the family. Today, there are over 130 Shaw’s Supermarkets in New England.
